10 Ways You’re Losing Members Without Knowing It
What actually keeps people paying month after month.

A content library isn’t a community
Stack a hundred videos behind a paywall and members will still cancel in month two. Videos don’t keep anyone around. People do. If your login breaking is the only thing your members would notice, you didn’t build a community. You built a library with a subscription fee.
Kill the “introduce yourself” thread
Nobody wants to type a bio for strangers on day one. Replace the welcome thread with one prompt: post the one thing you’re stuck on right now. Members get a real answer in their first ten minutes instead of a like on their intro post. That’s the moment they decide whether to stick around.
A ghost town is a cadence problem
If your community feels like a ghost town, it’s probably not the platform. It’s that you posted once last month and expected people to show up daily on their own. Members need something they can set a clock to. Same day, same time, every week, even when it’s small.
Live calls save memberships. Recordings don’t.
Recorded lessons answer questions. They don’t make anyone show up on a Tuesday. People renew because they were in the room, not because they watched a video alone at midnight. Cut your content budget before you cut your live call.
Retention math beats acquisition math
Everyone chases new sign-ups. Almost nobody checks who’s quietly canceling. Gain ten members and lose eight, and you netted two, not ten. Fix why people leave before you spend another dollar on why people join.

Beginners drown in your advanced firehose
Post your most advanced strategy next to a beginner’s first question and the beginner logs off. For good. Segment by where someone is, not by what they paid. A brand new member needs a welcome mat, not your masterclass replay.
Points mean nothing without a job to do
Badges for logging in train people to log in and do nothing else. Give points for the actions that actually predict who renews: posting a win, showing up to a call, finishing a lesson. Gamify the behavior you want, not the behavior that’s easy to track.
A free community with no path to paid is a hobby
I love a free community, but I don’t run one just to have people around. A free community with no path to a paid offer is a hobby with my name on it. Every free member should know exactly what’s next, on day one.
Your best affiliates are already inside
Stop hunting for affiliates on the outside. The member who’s been posting wins in your community for six months is already selling your product for you, for free. Give her a certification and a commission, and watch her do it on purpose.
Automate the first 7 days, or it breaks at scale
If your onboarding depends on you personally welcoming every new member, it works until it doesn’t. The week someone joins decides if they stay for a year. Build that first week into the system, not into your calendar.
